Reflections From The Fasting Mimicking Diet

I contacted Prolon who sell a 5 day fasting mimicking diet protocol, and they kindly sent me a box to try as I was drawn towards it due to the potential for it to help my clients with weight loss and improving metabolic markers.

I was already well aware of Dr Valter Longo, a US-Italian professor who has been voted in the top 50 most influential people in health in the world for his pioneering work in the fields of fasting, longevity and cancer prevention. Valter has extensively researched the benefits of fasting and how to fast in a safe, controlled and effective way, and this is how Prolon was created.

Prolon is a calorie restricted diet with the foods and drinks provided for you. Each day contains 7-800 cals and doesn’t break the fast, even the yummy keto bars. There is soup, snacks, teas and a glycerol drink that prevents muscle wastage.

I’m not going to lie, my first fast was hard. On day 2 I had a dull headache all day, even though I don’t drink caffeine, I have later come to realise that I wasn’t hydrating well enough.

On day 3 I felt really cold and I was so hungry, but on days 4 and 5, I felt amazing! My skin was glowing, I had bags of energy and my mind was clear and focused.

I was actually excited for my 2nd fast the following month, which I have just completed and found much easier. No headaches, coldness and hardly any hunger.

Research has shown that fasting in this way once a month for three months can reverse your biological age by 2.5 years and improve metabolic markers such as LDL and HbA1c blood glucose.

What it has also done is to completely change my mindset around food. I’m much more grateful and mindful of what I’m eating, how much I am eating and when I’m eating. Some bad habits had crept in around snacking, treating myself and mindless eating. I have also lost 6lbs which had crept on over the last few years, so I am really pleased with that.

I’m so excited about the potential this has for longevity, T2D, heart health, weight loss and possibly cancer prevention. Next time I will go into more detail on the mechanisms of action.

The FMD fast is not suitable for T1D and if you take any medication, you must consult with your doctor first.
