In the last instalment, I mentioned that some food

In the last instalment, I mentioned that some foods can assist in healthy ageing, and it is true! A diet high in antioxidants, such as berries, leafy green vegetables, and nuts, can help protect cells from damage. Fatty fish, like salmon and mackerel, provide essential omega-3 fatty acids, which support brain health and reduce inflammation. Whole grains, legumes, and fruits offer fibre, which aids digestion and helps regulate blood sugar levels and cholesterol.

But now we are going to dive a little deeper. A study published in the journal ‘Cell’, identified what they call ‘The 12 Hallmarks of Ageing’, and so what are these?

1 🔥Chronic Inflammation - Chronic low-grade inflammation can damage tissues and accelerate aging.

2 🐛Mitochondrial Dysfunction - Reduced mitochondrial function can lead to decreased energy production and increased oxidative stress.

3 🥗Deregulated Nutrient Sensing - Impaired nutrient sensing pathways, such as insulin/IGF-1 signaling and mTOR, can contribute to aging.

4 🧬Genomic Instability - Errors in DNA replication and repair can lead to mutations and cellular dysfunction.

5 🧬Telomere Attrition - The shortening of telomeres, protective caps on chromosomes, limits cell division.

6 🧬Epigenetic Alterations - Changes in gene expression can affect cellular processes.

7 💪Loss of Proteostasis - The decline in protein quality control mechanisms can lead to protein aggregation and cellular dysfunction.

8 📶Cellular Senescence - The accumulation of senescent cells, which are cells that have stopped dividing but remain metabolically active, can contribute to aging.

9 📶Stem Cell Exhaustion - The decline in stem cell function can limit tissue repair.

10 📶Altered Intercellular Communication - Impaired communication between cells can disrupt tissue function.

11 🥕Metabolite Imbalance - Changes in metabolite levels can disrupt cellular metabolism.

12 📶Tissue Stem Cell Exhaustion - The depletion of tissue stem cells can limit tissue repair and regeneration.

The need for more nutrients as we age increases due to the depletion of our soils, the increase in ultra-processed foods, slower digestion and assimilation, farming cattle being milked and killed too soon, toxins in the environment, anti-nutrients in some foods, lack of sunlight from working indoors, a lack of oily fish due to availability and sustainability and nutrient depletion from some medications. So we need to pay more attention than ever before to make sure our diets are as nutrient dense as possible and supplementing if we can’t get what we need from food alone.

In addition to this, allostatic load refers to the cumulative effects that chronic stress has on our mental and physical health. More simply, it refers to the ‘wear and tear’ on the body that life events and environmental stressors create. Allostatic load and negative life events are a significant predictor for chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular disease. So, in order to rebalance that lifeload we need to give ourselves ‘check-points’ where we are resting, taking stock and resetting our mind and body.

To begin to unpick whether you are ageing healthily, here are some basic key markers that you need to explore.

These include:

👉HbA1c
👉hsCRP
👉ApoB
👉DNA SNPs

But did you know that positive and negative feelings about ageing can influence our health on a physical level?

And we all know that keeping active and exercising is good for our overall health and weight, but did you know that exercise increases glutathione production in the liver, which supports the reduction in oxidative stress which can reduce diseases such as cancer?

Building strong bones and muscles is also a fundamental key process of healthy ageing because if we can support our body, protect ourselves from falls and maintain lean muscle then it is predicted that we will live longer.

It was a real privilege and an honour to be back in the podcast studio with Dodge Woodall and to welcome previous guest Becki Houlston. We sat down for the Eventful Lives Podcast to discuss the five biggest killers of men, which was in aid of International Men’s Day which was on Tuesday 19th November, as I wanted to shine a spotlight on the day, which this year focuses on ‘positive male role models’.

We discussed the big issue of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, cancer and mental health concerns, and once again I have seen a surge in men reaching out to me to get their health concerns checked. Since last time I was on the podcast I have helped many men to shed many stone in weight, reverse type 2 diabetes, check in on their heart health, lower cholesterol and change their diet and lifestyle to prevent chronic disease in the future.z

If you’re new here, then let me give you an update on my journey. My passion for health and wellbeing grew when my husband and daughter both faced health challenges, and I made it my personal goal to help them to feel better.

Since opening my practice, I have presented on the topic of ‘The Big Issue of Ultra-Processed Foods’ and also ‘Men’s Health, An Undiagnosed Epidemic’ in full day lectures for ‘The Institute for Optimum Nutrition’.

I have also worked alongside companies such as Dorset Mind, Rise Wellness and Gym, Running Free, Sustudio Canford Cliffs, The Collaborative Network, Peer2Peer board-networks at Limewood and The Captains Club and online for global companies, Barclays Bank, Simplyhealth, Elsevier and Lexis Nexis Risk Solutions.

I’m the Nutrition Expert for BBC Radio Solent where I have a monthly slot, and I was voted the ‘UK’s Most Transformational Nutritionist 2023’ for my work in looking outside of the box when it comes to dietary and nutrition advice and support. I was also independently voted no.1. Nutritionist in Dorset 2024 for my quality of service.

I’m on the road! It was great to see the team at BBC Radio Solent this morning, and to be speaking on Hot Radio last week and also tomorrow. On Wednesday the next talk for men’s health on the Eventful Lives Podcast launches, while I’m also presenting in person in Cambridge and online for Barclays and LexisNexis.

Ahead of International Men’s Day on Tuesday 19th November, I wanted to shine a spotlight on the day, which this year focuses on ‘positive male role models’. How often do you tell the men in your life how much of a positive impact they have had and thank them for the support that they give. If you have someone like that in your life then now is a good time to show your appreciation. ❤️

This week, I’m traveling to various parts of the UK to present and speak on the topic of men’s health. Firstly on Hot Radio, BBC Radio Solent, in Coventry and online for Barclays Bank. In addition to this, my second podcast interview with Dodge Woodall and guest Becki Houlston will launch on 20th November.

In these talks I’ll be discussing the biggest health challenges that men face today, which are type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, cancer and mental health concerns. Together with my collaborations, networks and partners we will be helping to raise awareness and help guide men towards ways that they can make positive changes to their health. ❤️

The Gut-Skin Connection in Relation to Eczema

👉Know your trigger foods

This might involve keeping a food diary and removing trigger foods for a certain length of time to assess symptoms

👉Consider gluten sensitivity and celiac disease

There is a strong correlation between gluten sensitivity and celiac disease in relation to eczema

👉Consider an eating window for digestive health

Having an eating window of say 8 hours gives your digestive system a chance to ‘rest and digest’

👉Limit inflammation and oxidative stress

Diet and lifestyle can increase these processes in the body. Limiting fried and ultra-processed foods is one way to avoid this

👉Consider supplements that are known to support the gut-skin connection

These include vitamin D, vitamin E and zinc

👉Include L.Rhamnosus as a probiotic strain

This strain of beneficial bacteria has been scientifically shown to support the gut-skin connection

👉Prioritise Sleep

Having a good bedtime routine and getting optimal sleep as often as possible helps to prevent additional stress on the body so that it can dampen inflammation

👉Support your digestion with digestive enzymes

These can be very effective at supporting digestion which in turn decreases food sensitivities and leaky gut, further helping the gut-skin connection

👉Finally, Try a herbal tea

Oolong and fig leaf tea have been scientifically shown to support the gut-skin connection.
